Baseline System Configurations:
  1. Compared to a solid CMU wall with 2.5” thick XPS, R value = 12.5 with metal Z girts 16” oc.
    Effective R-value of 4.6 (U=.2174)
  2. Compared to typical 4 ½” thick gypsum-based wall with 3 1/2 metal studs, R-11 fiberglass batt and 5/8" exterior sheathing.

Building model parameters:

Window areas are not included. The height of the model building walls is 14' per story, with a total of three stories. The study assumed natural gas furnace for heating with 90 percent efficiency and utilization of electricity for cooling with a SEER of 10.Calculations are based on average heating and cooling degree-day data located at ncdc.noaa.gov. Calculations are based on opaque wall area with conductive heat loss.

Thermal Bridging is the Problem

When metal is used to connect the exterior components of a building directly to the interior framing, this causes a thermal bridge. This thermal path of least resistance allows heat (or cold) to escape, creating a vulnerability for cold spots and allowing moisture problems.
