The Holes in Other CI Systems
We’ve all been outside on a freezing cold day and zipped our jacket up just a little more, jammed our hands a bit further into our pockets, and tried to pull our arms closer to our body to stay warm. And it often works. But what if there were holes in your jacket? No matter how hard you tried, you could never get as warm as you wanted because the jacket was flawed.
Continuous insulation is like a jacket for our buildings, and most CI systems are full of holes. This is hugely detrimental to anyone trying to build an energy-efficient building.

Most buildings are constructed using steel and other metals to connect exterior building components such as cladding directly to the interior framing. This is where the “holes in the jacket” come from– that sort of construction causes thermal bridges. Because this creates a path of least resistance thermally, hot and cold energy escapes leaving the building vulnerable to moisture problems and cold spots.
These metal attachment systems also typically use thermal-short fasteners, which are common causes of cold spots and condensation, and are limited to being used on stud walls.
