Traditionally, z-girt material was made out of metal, but innovation in the building materials and continuous insulation industries have created z-girt material out of thermoset pultruded composite material and composite metal hybrid (CMH) material. In composite metal hybrid (CMH), the properties and characteristics of metal and thermoset pultrusion composite are combined into one product. Z girt quality can be compared by material selection performance in five key categories, including structural capability, fire resistance, thermal performance, durability, and weatherproof quality.

When rating these materials by their features on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the best. The total overall rating is then out of a potential of 50 total rating points. With this rating comparison, several key points are immediately visible.

Structural

Structurally, metal sets the standard at 10. Whereas a composite is typically at a three out of 10. What this means is it modulates the elasticity — this is more like a rubber band and it’s going to deflect. With composite only material, you will need to be aware, as you are not going to want to model this as a uniform distribution. You want to do point loads in your modeling, as there are no uniform pounds per foot, you need to actually put your point loads on and the reactions. The composite metal hybrid receives a 10 out of 10, because it’s using the metal strength for where the metal is, a strength is needed.

 

Fire Resistance

For fire resistance, metal receives a 10 out of 10 because it’s noncombustible. Thermoset pultruded composite is rated at a five due to the fire retardant properties. The composite metal hybrid z-girt material is rated at a 9 because really it is using the noncombustible material where the fire is at.

 

Thermal

Thermal conduction is how thermally efficient a material is. Metal receives a 1 out 10. The problem that launched the whole need for composite substructure is metal, metal girts thermally short circuit. The thermoset pultruded composite is rated a 10, as is the composite metal hybrid (CMH). The through wall component portion of the material is composite as well on the CMH z-girt.

 

Durability

Durability includes crack propagation, creep, fastener retention, and overall durability. Metal is the gold standard for durability and is rated a 10. Thermoset pultruded composite by itself is rated a 3, as there are singularities and forced vocal points. Composite metal hybrid (CMH) material is rated a 10 because it uses the best of both worlds.

 

Weatherproof

With weatherproof, we are looking at shingle lap in a general sense. Metal is rated at a 5 because it is thin and shingle laps well. Thermoset pultruded composite is rated a 4 because it is not as weatherproof due to its thickness. Composite metal hybrid is rated a 10 because it uses gaskets and a drainage plane in improving details for weather tightness.

 

Total Comparison of Metal, Thermoset Pultruded Composite, and Composite Metal Hybrid Z-Girt Quality

When you look at it overall, you are seeing a score out of 50. Metal is rated 36, thermoset pultruded composite is rated 25, and composite metal hybrid is rated 49. When comparing the newer thermoset pultruded composite girts to the traditional metal girts, it’s not an improvement overall. You actually see a decrease, because you are losing structural, fire and durability qualities. However, with a composite metal hybrid, it’s an overall rating of 49, which is an improvement in almost every single category.
